The North Dakota Centers of Excellence Commission awarded funding requests for a Research North Dakota grant and a Venture Grant Phase II grant for total of $248,000 at its meeting held Friday, May 11, 2018.
Research ND and the Venture Grant Phase II programs promote the development and commercialization of products and processes through industry/university research partnerships by providing matching funds to help companies pay for the university research.
Through Research ND and Venture Grant Phase II, firms can leverage their research, development and commercialization funds and gain access to the creative talents and extensive research base of North Dakota’s Research Universities. These matching funds are awarded on a competitive basis for projects based on proposals submitted jointly by researchers from a North Dakota research university and a private sector partner.
The following requests were funded:
Research ND
UND Petroleum Engineering and School of Medical and Health Sciences in partnership with Lillestol Research, LLC was awarded $178,000 to study mechanobiological variations of a cell to track and diagnose cancer cells, and monitor the effectiveness of the different treatments. The long-term goal of this study would be to establish a quantitative and practical diagnostic method using a variety of cancerous cells as a model, which can be used clinically to detect cancer in the early stages on tissues.
Venture Grant Phase II
UND Civil Engineering in partnership with JTF, LLC was awarded $70,000 to build on results of a Venture Grant Phase I and field test the performance of a novel carbonaceous bio-soil amendment (CSA). The overall goal of Research ND and Venture Grant Phase II grant programs is to have a long term positive economic impact on the State and Private Sector through various means including, but not limited to; economic diversification, improved production factors, and the development of new markets.
