Innovate ND Business Competition Winners Announced

The North Dakota Department of Commerce announced the winners of the Innovate ND business competition for entrepreneurs held May 30th in Bismarck.
“This is an exciting program because it demonstrates that innovation and entrepreneurship are alive and well and hard at work in North Dakota,” said Jared Stober entrepreneurship program manager at the North Dakota Department of Commerce. “Business development drives our economic growth and it all starts with innovative people who have a promising business idea and the desire to build that venture right here in our state.”
The following winners were announced during the event:
One Minute Pitch Competition - The pitch competition allows each participant one minute to present their business idea. A two-page executive summary is also required. The winner was:
  • Discovery Express Kids – Erin Nyren-Erickson – Christine, ND - $1,000 - Discovery Express Kids provides online teaching tools for parents and teachers to engage children in science learning. 
Idea Competition - The idea competition provides an opportunity for startups to compete based on their business idea. This category serves as a starting point for Innovate ND participants to gain feedback for their idea. Winners included:
  • Got Gravel? – Marc Williams – Williston, ND - $2,500 - Got Gravel? is a business to business website that matches contractors who need gravel with suppliers who have gravel for sale.   
  • Custom Buckets – Tom Volk – Bismarck, ND - $1,250 - Custom Buckets targets fisherman and can turn an ordinary 5 gallon bucket into a customized fishing accessory providing storage solutions, LED lighting and backup power for additional electronic devices. 
  • Sanada – Diana Roloff – Bismarck, ND - $1,250. Sanada developed the Soft Bite Block which is a simple and safe solution to improve patient care by reducing the potential of an airway obstruction during emergence from a general anesthetic. 
Venture Competition - The venture competition targeted businesses that are ready for venture capital or at an advanced stage. Innovate ND worked with venture capital and angel investment firms to create potential opportunities to make a business deals during the competition. Winners include:
  • Fargo 3D Printing – John Schneider – Fargo, ND - $8,000. Fargo 3D Printing helps businesses and individuals looking to get started using 3D printing by providing expertise, advise and eco-friendly supplies. 
  • ACLS Medical Training – Tommy Leikas – Fargo, ND - $4,000. ACLS Medical Training is an online education company offering advanced cardiac life support (ACLS), pediatric advanced life support and basic life support training and certification to medical professionals.
  • AdShark Marketing – Rick Berg – Fargo, ND - $1,000. AdShark Marketing is an internet marketing agency based in Fargo, ND. 
  • Fresh Finance – Teresa Leno – Fargo, ND - $1,000. Fresh Finance is a subscription based dynamic newsletter that works like a website when opened. The newsletter is produced for broker dealer firms, financial advisors, insurance agents, fund management companies and financial institutions. 
  • Midwest Streams – Shane White – Fargo, ND - $1,000.  Midwest Streams provides easy online streaming solutions for funeral homes so family and friends can attend a funeral from anywhere in the world.   
The Innovate ND business competition is part of an expanded program focused on fostering innovation and accelerating venture formation/growth in North Dakota. Since 2006, Innovate ND has served over 450 entrepreneurs, startups, and early-stage ventures by providing a comprehensive educational program and coaching through entrepreneurial centers to help entrepreneurs build new ventures.
